Aromatherapy with Essential Oils is an ancient healing tool and one of the fastest growing fields in alternative medicine today. The meaning of it is "treatment using scents". Aromatherapy is used for the relief of pain, alleviate tension, and fatigue, and invigorate the entire body. It is the therapeutic use of plant-derived, aromatic essential oils to promote physical and psychological well-being. Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment of caring for the body with pleasant smelling botanical oils such as rose, lemon, lavender and peppermint.
The essential oils are aromatic essences extracted from plants, flowers, fruit, fruit skin, leaves, seeds, trees, bark and grasses with distinctive therapeutic physiological, and psychological properties, which improve and prevent illness. The essential oils taken from plants and used in aromatherapy have been described as their ”life force”. They are essential to the plants. There are about 150 essential oils. Most of these oils have antiseptic properties - some are antiviral, anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and antidepressant. EOils encyclopedia The essential oils can be massaged into the skin, mixed into bath water, or heated in many different ways in order to scent the entire room, or to be inhaled. Safety note: The use of essential oils on light bulbs is not recommended ! Many essential oils are flammable. Heat and ignition sources should therefore be avoided. High temperatures oxidize the oils and may build harmful products. The use of a ceramic oil heater or diffuser is recommended.
Essential oils work when physically absorbed by the skin: (bath, massage, compress). They also have a healing effect mentally and emotionally through their air scents: (inhalation). Essential oils can alleviate fatigue, reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. Aromatherapy and essential oils can have beneficial effects on a person’s moods.
When inhaled, the essential oils work on the brain and nervous system through stimulation of the olfactory nerves. We experience so many distinct scents because each oil/scent’s molecules stimulate our scent receptors at a different frequency, sending different vibrations to the Pituitary gland. It determines our personal attraction pleasure, memory, creativity, pain, repulsion, mental or emotional responses, and moods. The olfactory messages from the nostrils are sent out to the nerve system and endocrine glands throughout the body. Thus certain scents stimulate the Pineal gland for soothing and calming out the stress, the Adrenal glands for energy, and the Thymus for immune system stimulation.
You can inhale oils directly. Dosage: Boil 2 cups of water, reduce heat, and let water cool for 5-10 minutes. Add 2-5 drops of essential oil, or a combination of 2-3 essential oils. Inhale vapors for 5-10 minutes. Note: Use a stainless steel or glass bowl! You can also place a towel over your head to increase concentration. Inhalations can be repeated 2-3 times daily for treatment of specific respiratory disorders. Note: Keep your eyes closed to avoid irritation or protect the sensitive eye area!
The essential oils have a powerful effect on the body as they are absorbed through the skin into the body’s circulatory system. You should always dilute oils that come into contact with the skin with some “carrier oil” such as sunflower, avocado, almond, and wheat germ oils. It is important to dilute oils as some are highly concentrated which can cause a possible skin irritation. Massage oil is a combination of essential oils added to base (carrier) oil.
Dosage: Blend 5 drops of your chosen essential oil or a combination of essential oils with 10 ml of carrier oil to create therapeutic massage oil. You may use a single carrier oil or combination of carrier oils as your base. To get the maximum benefit from essential oils, it should be made from natural, pure raw materials. Synthetically made oils do not work.
Aromatherapy as a special bath therapy with essential oils can have profound effects on, the healing of skin disorders, alleviating muscular aches and pains, enhancing respiratory functions, reducing levels of stress, as well as increasing and supporting blood and lymph circulation. Essential oils as special bath products are very relaxing, and can begin to facilitate healing on numerous levels both physiologically as well as psychologically. Select one sensual oil or try blending up to three oils to create nice and soothing carrier bath oil.
Dosage: Add 5 drops of essential oil to a 30 ml tablespoon of carrier oil and mix. Dosage is recommended at 5-10 drops a full body bath depending on which essential oils you choose. The water should be warm but not hot, and the essential oils should be added to the bath when the taps are turned off, and either, the individual is in the water, or right before, getting into it. Customize drops upon choice of oils. Suggestion: The swishing around of water in order to disperse concentration of essential oils in it. When the essential oils are noted as being skin irritating, mix them with a tablespoon of milk - natural dispersant, or with a drop of soluble substance before adding them to the bath. Essential oils could also be diluted in carrier oils and powdered milk, sea salts, and milk to reduce any possibility of irritation.
Foot and hand baths
Foot and hand baths can be included in the treatment of: arthritis, poor blood circulation, athlete’s foot, nail fungus and other skin disorders of the hands and fee, low energy, and stress. Dosage: Add 5-7 drops of essential oil in a basin of warm or hot water. Soak feet or hands for 10-15 minutes. 1/2 cup of Epsom salts could be added for more benefit.
This method of application is used in treating muscular aches and pains, varicose veins, sprains, bruises, menstrual cramps and respiratory congestion. Recommendation: Use a cold compress for recent conditions and a hot compress for long standing conditions! Dosage: Add 5-7 drops of essential oil, or a combination thereof, to 2 cups of water. Swish water around and then place a piece of linen or cotton fabric into the water. Place on area to be treated. Let the compress to cool or to heat to the body temperature. Then remove it.
